Mindset Matters: How to Get Out of Your Own Way and Start Growing

January 12, 20263 min read

Could it be that the biggest thing holding your business back isn’t your pricing, your marketing, or your systems… but you?

And before that feels uncomfortable — stay with me. Because this isn’t about blame. It’s about awareness.

I’ve worked with countless salon owners, therapists, coaches and wellness practitioners over the years, and one thing shows up again and again: the real blocks to growth often live in our own heads.

Not because you’re incapable.
Not because you’re doing it wrong.
But because mindset quietly shapes every decision you make — or avoid.

When Hard Work Isn’t the Problem

Most of the people I work with are already working hard. They care deeply about their clients. They’ve invested time, money, and energy into their business. On the outside, everything looks “fine”.

But underneath, there’s often:

  • Second-guessing every decision

  • Playing small to stay safe

  • Avoiding uncomfortable changes

  • Waiting until things feel “perfect”

  • Feeling busy but not actually moving forward

This is what getting in your own way often looks like. Not laziness. Not lack of ambition. Just fear wearing a sensible outfit.

The Subtle Mindset Traps That Stall Growth

One of the most common traps I see is staying in survival mode for too long. When you’ve been juggling everything yourself — clients, admin, finances, marketing — your nervous system gets used to reacting, not planning.

You become brilliant at coping… but not at growing.

Another big one is over-identifying with your business. When your confidence is tied to bookings, reviews, or revenue, every wobble feels personal. So instead of taking strategic risks, you stay where it feels familiar — even if it’s exhausting.

And then there’s comparison. Watching others online who seem more confident, more successful, more “together”. It quietly chips away at your belief in yourself, even though you’re only seeing their highlight reel.

Growth Starts With Awareness, Not Hustle

Here’s the part most people miss: you don’t mindset your way forward by forcing positivity or “just believing harder”.

Real mindset shifts come from slowing down enough to notice what’s actually driving your choices.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I avoiding right now?

  • What decision feels heavy — and why?

  • Am I choosing what’s comfortable, or what’s aligned with where I want to go?

Often, growth stalls not because you don’t know what to do — but because something internally is resisting the next step.

You Don’t Need to Fix Yourself — You Need Space to Think

This is especially true in the beauty and wellness industry, where you’re constantly holding space for others. When do you get the chance to pause, reflect, and reset?

Clarity doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from creating space — mentally and practically — to reconnect with your direction.

That’s why mindset and strategy can’t be separated. A clear plan helps calm the mind. And a regulated mind makes better decisions.

Getting Out of Your Own Way Starts Small

You don’t need a total overhaul. You don’t need to suddenly feel fearless or confident all the time.

Start with:

  • One honest check-in with yourself

  • One decision you’ve been avoiding

  • One boundary that protects your energy

  • One step that supports future you, not just today’s workload

Momentum builds when action comes from clarity, not pressure.

Final Thoughts

Mindset isn’t about thinking happy thoughts or pushing through discomfort at all costs. It’s about recognising when your thoughts are keeping you stuck — and gently choosing something different.

You already have the skills, experience, and heart to grow your business. Sometimes, the real work is learning how to stop standing in your own way.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or mentally tangled right now, my free guide Break the Spiral is designed to help you pause, reset, and regain clarity — without judgement or overwhelm.

Because growth doesn’t start with doing more.
It starts with creating space to move forward differently.
